April 19, 2012

April 19, 2012 - So earlier today, someone brought to my attention this article which better illustrates a lot of the points I tried to make yesterday (though I must note that I certainly feel male on male gaslighting happens).

Meanwhile, this comic featuring a woman sitting on a toilet exposing nothing to you, the viewer, is about as NSFW as I really want to push my art (though discussions of abortion probably aren't the greatest things to be viewing at work to begin with, or pretty much anything unrelated to your job cuz employee handbooks usually frown upon using company resources (like say a work computer) for non-work related activities (like say reading webcomics). it's also quite possible this is a fireable offense, but most employers would probably warn you if they particularly minded cuz training new hires is time consuming). I'm a little worried what this self-censorship limitation may mean in the future considering some of the plots I want to do, but I generally view that censorship should be viewed as a challenge to work around rather than an obstacle to attempt to tear down. Furthermore, pushing the boundaries of what I feel is appropriate undermines some of the comic's message. My goal isn't to be edgy, it's to be authentic. I want to take away any preconceptions it's inappropriate to talk about these topics, rather than sex them up and make them more provocative than they already are. Too much of the media already does that, and I'd like to be as honest with these issues as I can.
