June 26, 2012 - I think one of the biggest problems facing women's rights today is how little people talk about it. No one wants to start a political debate over these issues, and, to use an opposing argument, a lot of positive gains have been made over the past century when you consider it wasn't until 1920 that women gained the right to even vote. But there's still a lot of problems, and for a variety of reasons, many people seem to remain silent regarding these problems. Try their best not to make a scene.

But remaining silent doesn't solve anything. And I agree with Philip that there was nothing inappropriate about stating his opinion and willingly engaging in a debate. I'd love to see more of that happen.

Still, I can't completely discount Amanda's point of view. Philip isn't in a political forum or even being really confronted with overt sexism that should be confronted (for the silence is far more damaging when it takes place when women are directly under attack). He's at a child's birthday party. The event should be about Scotty and celebrating the anniversary of Scotty's birth rather than engage in political discussion.

So maybe Philip would be better served somewhere else, helping the women he agrees with at the clinic, or challenging the pro-life groups by his doors. But I'm glad Philip's willing to say something. Everyone should have a voice.

Also, inflatable castles are awesome.
