November 19, 2012 - Last Friday, io9 reported a new study examining the effects of what happens when women are denied abortions with fairly significant impact on their use of social welfare programs and the likelihood to to remain in abusive relationships and experience complications to their physical health, but no impact on long term emotional or mental health. All of this ties nicely to a larger discussion on the effects denying an abortion presents to a woman's overall well-being. When faced with an unplanned pregnancy, there's never an easy answer. Sometimes a pregnancy does occur with no complications, physically or financially, but there's no guarantee and any statistical information indicates that problems certainly occur.

Cora's situation isn't that unique. She's struggled to raise her son, and she struggled to make her way through the foster system. I'll do more with arguments against putting children up for adoption in the future. Adoption can be great. But every kid doesn't always get adopted, and the foster care system's pretty rife with problems with disproportionate numbers of children in the system receiving some form of medication, experiencing some form of abuse, or representing a minority background indicating inherent discrimination against minority children being adopted (especially African American children). Despite having a lengthy discussion on Foster Care's negative effects on wikipedia, it has no similar section on positive attributes.

Cora's own negative personal perception of foster care has thus shaped her decision to abort, which I don't feel to be a particularly unique opinion for someone of her background to have. It also sheds some criticism on any pro-life argument towards simply giving a child up for adoption (especially when implying to put the child up for adoption through the foster care system as so little emphasis seems to be placed on other adoption service options).

Also here's a link to a Girls with Slingshots comic I drew that unfortunately didn't make the main page.
